Packing List Manual
Packing List consists of a main, trip, and settings view.
Main
The Main view displays a list of all trips including upcoming and past trips. Upcoming trips that still require packing are listed first, sorted by date. Next are upcoming trips that are completely packed. Finally, past trips are listed last. Each header also shows the number of trips it contains. The total trip count is displayed on the bottom toolbar.

Each entry in the list shows the trip name, departure date (in blue), the number of trip items, percentage packed (if not packed), total item value (if not 0), and any trip notes.

Add Trip

To add a new trip, tap the + button. Set the trip name, departure date, and notes by tapping on their fields. Below the trip notes are a list of all existing trips and packing lists (if any). Tap one or more trips and packing lists to include their items in the new trip. Selected trips and packing lists have a checkmark on the right. If the same item is included in more than one selected trip or packing list, the appended item will have the larger quantity and value of the original items. Tap the Save button to save the trip or the Cancel button to discard it.

Edit Trip

To edit trips, tap the Edit button. Tap any trip to modify it. The packing list field is not displayed in edit mode since the trip item list is independent from the initial packing list used. To delete the trip, tap the Delete Trip button at the bottom. To exit edit mode, tap the Done button.

Delete Trip

To delete a trip, enter edit mode and tap the minus button to the left of the trip and then the Delete button to confirm.

Trip
The Trip view shows the packing list for a particular trip. It allows you to pack and unpack items, modify the trip packing list, undo previous packing and unpacking, and export the trip packing list to an email.

The trip title is displayed at the top of the view. The trip packing list is split into categories. The items remaining to be packed are black and are displayed at the top of the list while packed items are grey and displayed below. The toolbar at the bottom contains buttons to undo, export the trip packing list via email, and displays the current packed status.

Packing

Items are displayed by category and may be sorted by their packing status (see the Move Packed Items To Bottom setting below). Each category displays an item count.

If the Move Packed Items To Bottom setting is enabled, items are sorted by their packing status. The item count represents the number of items in that category for that state (e.g. remaining to be packed or packed). Items remaining to be packed are displayed first with black text. Packed items are displayed last in grey text. To pack an item, simply tap the item. The item will fade away and reappear at the bottom of the list under a "packed" category. To unpack an item, tap that item. It will fade away from the "packed" category and reappear at the top under the appropriate category.

If the Move Packed Items To Bottom setting is disabled, all items are grouped by their category independent of their packing state. Each category's item count includes both remaining to be packed and packed items. Packed items appear in grey text while items remaining to be packed are in black. To pack an item, simply tap the item. To unpack an item, tap it.

As you pack (or unpack) items, the toolbar at the bottom is updated with your packing progress. The packing status of items is instantly saved as you pack or unpack items. You may quit Packing List at any time without losing the packed status of items.

To undo the last item packed or unpacked, tap the undo button on the left of the toolbar at the bottom. Unlimited, multiple undo is supported, however, the undo stack is cleared whenever you switch to another trip or enter edit mode.

Edit Item List

To edit the item list, tap the Edit button. This will display all items available. Items currently included in the trip are in black while items not currently included are in grey. To remove or add an item, tap the item. Tap the Save button to save the new item list or the Cancel button to discard the changes.

Edit Item Details

To edit the quantity and value of an item, enter edit mode and tap the detail button to the right of the item. Tap the quantity or value field to modify it. The total trip items value (if not 0) is displayed on the main view. The quantity is not used in determining the trip item count or total value, however. Also, modifying a trip item's quantity and value here does not affect the original packing list item's quantity and value.

Append Item/Packing List(s)

To add a new item or append existing trip and/or packing list items to the trip, tap the + button on the right of the toolbar at the bottom. Adding a new item will add it to both the trip and the item list. Select each trip/packing list to append their items to the trip. Items that already exist in the trip are not replaced, however.

Export

Settings
The settings view allows you to manage packing lists, categories, items, packing settings, import and export packing lists, backup/restore, trip export options, and reset the application. Tap the i button on the right of the toolbar on the bottom to access settings.

It may be used for keeping track of more expensive item values for customs or insurance purposes. To add a new item or append existing trips/packing lists to the current packing list, tap the + button at the top right of the view. Adding a new item will add it to both the packing list and the item list. Select each trip/packing list to append their items to the trip. Tap the Save button to save the changes or the Cancel button to discard them. To delete the item, tap the Delete Item button at the bottom. This will remove the item from the item list and all trips and packing lists.

To delete an item, tap the minus button to the left of the item and then the Delete button to confirm. Deleting an item will remove it from the item list and any trips and packing lists that contain it.

Move Packed Items To Bottom

The Move Packed Items To Bottom setting controls whether or not to move items to the bottom of the list as they are packed. If this setting is disabled, packed items do not move in the list but are greyed out.

Numeric Input Style

The Numeric Input Style setting sets the style of numeric keyboard to use. The Phone style lays the numeric keyboard out similar to a phone keypad with numbers incrementing from the top. The Calculator style is the opposite with numbers displayed similar to a calculator.

Import Packing List

Importing a packing list requires a WiFi connection. A WebDAV/HTTP server is started once the files are generated. To connect, use either the Bonjour or IP Address. The Bonjour address may not be available depending on the WiFi router used. From Mac OS X, switch to the Finder and select Connect To Server... (Command-K) under the Go menu. Be sure to enter the address exactly as displayed in the field. On Windows, go to My Network Places and click on Add Network Place. Follow the Wizard to add a new server. Once connected, copy or upload the packing list(s) from your desktop to the server folder. Disconnect the server once the files are copied and tap the Done button to finish. Alternatively, open a web browser and connect to the Bonjour or IP Address.

The packing list file is a CSV (comma separated value) file. The file may be created in a text editor or a spreadsheet (export as a CSV file). The file must be saved as a UTF-8 text file. The first line of the file is used to specify the packing list name (required) and description (optional). The following lines describe items in the packing list. Each item consists of a name (required), category (optional), description (optional), quantity (optional), and value (optional). If a category is not included, the item is added to the None category. If the category does not already exist, it is created and added to the list of categories. To match an item in the items list, the imported item must have the same name, category, and description. If an item does not already exist in the items list, the item is created and added to the items list.

Packing List File Format:

"packing list name","description",,,
"item name","category","description","quantity","value"
"item name 2","category","description","quantity","value"
"item name 3","category","description","quantity","value"
...
The above format is the raw CSV file format (as text). In a spreadsheet, instead of separating values with a comma (and using quotes), use a separate column for each set of values (name, category, etc.). Save or export the file as a CSV file.

Export Packing List

Tap the Export Packing List button to export packing lists. The packing list files may be shared with others (for import) or edited in a text editor or spreadsheet and then reimported into Packing List. The exported packing list file is a CSV (comma separated value) file described above in Import Packing List. The file(s) are transferred over WiFi (WebDAV/HTTP) similar to import (described above). Connect to either the Bonjour or IP Address displayed (follow the same connection instructions as in Import Packing List) and copy or download the backup file to your desktop. Disconnect the server once the file(s) have been copied and tap the Done button to finish.

Show Packed Items

The Show Packed Items setting controls whether or not to include the packed items of a trip in the exported email trip item list. If the setting is set to off, none of the packed items are included in the email.

Show Packed Status

The Show Packed Status setting turns the item packed status on or off in exported email trip item lists. If the setting is enabled, items display their packed status.

Export Email

The Export Email setting sets the default email address to use when exporting a trip item list.

Save Backup File

Tap the Save Backup File button to save a backup file for Packing List. This will save all trips, packing lists, categories, and items. The file is transferred over WiFi (WebDAV/HTTP) similar to import (described above). Connect to either the Bonjour or IP Address displayed (follow the same connection instructions as in Import Packing List) and copy or download the backup file to your desktop. Disconnect the server once the file has been copied and tap the Done button to finish.

Restore Backup File

Tap the Restore Backup File button to restore a backup file for Packing List. This will restore (and replace) all trips, packing lists, categories, and items. The file is transferred over WiFi (WebDAV/HTTP) similar to import (described above). Connect to either the Bonjour or IP Address displayed (follow the same connection instructions as in Import Packing List) and copy or upload the backup file from your desktop to the server folder. Restoring a backup file will replace all existing trips, packing lists, categories, and items currently in Packing List. Disconnect the server once the file has been copied and tap the Done button to finish.

Reset

Tapping the Reset button will restore and reset Packing List back to its original state. This will delete all trips, custom packing lists, categories, and items. It will also delete all user preferences.
